Project Management Institute Review

If you’re looking for the most recognized certification in the project management industry, then PMI’s PMP certification is it. PMI’s constant pursuit of improved standards for project management make them the clear leader in this field. Adding the PMP certification to your resume is an instant credibility add. PMI credential holders are also well sought-after for freelance work on websites like Guru and Upwork. This certification is difficult to obtain, having both education & work-experience requirements. If you have a 4-year degree and at least 36 months of project-leadership experience, you should strongly consider gaining this certification.

The Project Management Institute is the leading organization for project management standards. They develop the most widely used body of knowledge in the industry, referred to as the PMBoK. It is a fundamental resource for effective project management in any industry. The company is organized as a not-for-profit and their standards are used globally by almost all businesses. The offer several different project management certifications, but the Project Management Professional (PMP)® certification is by far the most recognized.

PMI has chapters in over 80 countries.  These chapters are led by volunteers, which really shows just how dedicated their members are.  PMI offers training in project management as well as academic research.  They remain on the cutting edge of project implementation and adapt their processes to an ever-changing business environment.  With over 3.6 million mentions of PMI on Linkedin, it’s clear this is one of the most sought-after certification bodies in the world.  The PMP certification has a high barrier of entry, requiring a college degree and proof of completed projects.  They do offer lower-level certifications, like the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® that have lower requirements.

Certifications Offered:

Let’s look at a few of the certifications that PMI offers and discuss who they are best suited for:
Project Management Professional (PMP)® – If you’ve worked in project management for any length of time, you’re familiar with the PMP.  This certification is considered the gold standard for active PM’s and the ultimate achievement.  Here is what PMI says about the certification on their website:  “The Project Management Professional (PMP)® is the world’s leading project management certification. Now including predictive, agile and hybrid approaches, the PMP® proves project leadership experience and expertise in any way of working. It supercharges careers for project leaders across industries and helps organizations find the people they need to work smarter and perform better.

Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® – If you don’t meet the stringent standards on the PMP, the CAPM certification may be your next best option.  If you’d like to manage larger projects and gain more responsibility or add project management skills into your current role, then the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is right for you.

PMI Professional in Business Analysis (PMI-PBA)® – While it may be less recognized than the other certifications above, the PMI-PBA is a great addition to your resume.

Online Reviews:

“My PMP certification is the one certification I’m truly proud of.  I hold it at the same level as my MBA, and it has been just as valuable.  Having this certification gets me an interview at any company I apply for.  Employers instantly recognize it as a badge of quality.”

“My PMP certification has really opened doors.  I already had about 10 years experience in project management before attempting the PMP.  Even with experience, I found that employers wouldn’t take you seriously unless you hold a PMI certification.”
